Gillingham sits in the thick of Medway, bracketed by the M2 to the north and the perpetually optimistic A2 Rainham Road threading through the middle, complete with ANPR cameras at the Ash Tree Lane junction ready to catch anyone treating a yellow box as a polite suggestion. The High Street is pedestrianised — great for shoppers, less great if you've just broken down on Canterbury Street and need someone to actually reach you. Matchdays at Priestfield Stadium turn Gordon Road and the surrounding streets into an impromptu car park, and the Strand Leisure Park car park has its own rich tradition of unexpected fines. When the M2 closes at Junction 1 (which it does, with alarming regularity), the diversion funnels everything down the A289 through Lower Gillingham, past Yokosuku Way and Ito Way — roads named after Japanese cities to honour William Adams, the Elizabethan navigator born here who founded Japan's navy, which is either wonderful local history or the most elaborate way a town has ever explained its own traffic problem.
