What's This All About Then?

Your car's lighting is an MOT essential and a safety necessity. But modern car bulbs aren't always simple - some need half the front end removed to access, others need coding, and don't get us started on LED conversions that cause error codes. We handle all lighting issues: headlight bulbs, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights, interior lights, and dashboard illumination. We also fit accessories like dash cams, parking sensors, and anything else that needs wiring into your car properly (not like your mate did it with electrical tape).

How it works

Your car's electrics run from a 12-volt system, with the battery and alternator feeding power through a web of fuses, relays and wiring to every lamp and accessory. Fuses are the deliberate weak link — they blow to protect the wiring if something shorts. Bulbs range from old-school halogen filaments to modern LED and HID units, each with different fitting quirks and, in some cars, bulbs the computer actively monitors. Add-ons like dashcams, parking sensors or reversing cameras need a proper switched or permanent-live feed, correctly fused and tidily routed behind trim. Get the feed or earth wrong and you'll get flickering, blown fuses, warning messages, or a battery that's flat by morning.

Warning signs to watch for

  • A bulb out — headlight, brake, indicator or number plate — flagged on the MOT or by a dash message
  • Indicators flashing much faster than normal (a classic sign of a failed bulb)
  • Dim, yellowed or foggy headlights that don't throw enough light at night
  • Repeatedly blowing fuses, or accessories that cut out randomly
  • Interior or boot lights staying on and draining the battery overnight
  • A newly fitted dashcam or accessory that flickers, resets, or won't hold power

Common causes

Simple bulb failure — filaments wear out, and LEDs eventually degrade
Corroded bulb holders, connectors and earth points, especially around wheel arches
Water ingress into headlight units causing condensation and short circuits
A blown fuse or tired relay in the lighting or accessory circuit
Poorly fitted accessories tapped into the wrong feed, overloading a circuit
Chafed or perished wiring rubbing through against metal edges

What we do

We diagnose the actual fault first — bulb, holder, fuse, relay or wiring — rather than throwing bulbs at it. For accessories like dashcams, parking sensors and reversing cameras, we take a correctly fused feed, route the wiring neatly out of sight and make sure it won't flatten your battery. You get an honest quote up front and a job done to a standard that passes an MOT and lasts. All at your home, work or the roadside.

Lighting & Electrical Accessories — FAQs

Can you just swap a headlight bulb, or is it a big job now?

It depends on the car. On many older models it's a two-minute swap; on plenty of modern ones, access is so tight you have to remove trim, the wheel-arch liner or even part of the bumper to reach the bulb. We'll tell you which yours is before starting. Either way, we bring the right bulbs and fit them without damaging the surrounding parts.

Will fitting a dashcam drain my battery?

Only if it's wired badly. A dashcam on a permanent live with parking mode will keep drawing power when the car's off, and can flatten the battery over a few days standing. Done properly — with a switched feed or a hardwire kit that includes a low-voltage cut-off — it protects your battery and starts recording automatically. We route it neatly so no cables dangle across your view.

My fuse keeps blowing — why?

A fuse blows because too much current is flowing, which almost always means a short or an overloaded circuit rather than a faulty fuse. Fitting a bigger fuse to stop it blowing is dangerous — it removes the protection and risks melting the wiring. We trace the actual short or overload, often a chafed wire or a badly tapped accessory, and fix the root cause so it stays fixed.

Random Knowledge You Didn't Ask For

A dead bulb can be an MOT fail AND a £100 fine. Worth fixing before either happens.

Most headlight 'faults' are just dead bulbs. But if you replace the bulb and it dies again quickly, you've got a wiring issue.
