The A226 runs west–east through the whole borough, tying Gravesend to Dartford one way and Strood the other, brushing past Northfleet and Rosherville on the old London Road. The A2 sits along the top, ferrying half of Kent toward the Dartford Crossing and, inevitably, the associated traffic. Ebbsfleet International is on the doorstep, which is lovely until you are stuck behind everyone heading for it. Bluewater is close enough to lend its car-park congestion to the surrounding roads on any given Saturday. Parking-wise, the town has a handful of council car parks charging Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, plus St George's with its 370-odd spaces — the pedestrian zone shuts to traffic between 10am and 8pm, so if your car dies in the middle of it during the day, you and it are staying put. Beyond the centre, Singlewell, Chalk, Shorne, Cobham and Istead Rise spread out into proper countryside where the roads narrow, the potholes deepen, and a flat battery leaves you a very long way from anyone selling one. Gravesend Pier looks charming; less charming is discovering your alternator has given up while parked beside it.
