Sevenoaks: the commuter town that lost most of its namesake in a single night. When the Great Storm tore through in October 1987, six of the seven Coronation Oaks by the Vine cricket ground were flattened by 100mph winds — leaving the town briefly, and awkwardly, closer to Oneoak. Knole Park lost seventy per cent of its trees the same morning. It's since replanted, rebuilt, and settled back into being one of Kent's most expensive places to sit in a car going nowhere.

Sevenoaks lives and dies by the London connection. The A21 slices down from the M25 at Junction 5 towards Tonbridge and Hastings, the A25 runs east-west through Riverhead and out towards Brasted and Westerham, and the M26 clips the top of the district to link the M25 with the M20 — a stretch of motorway so short and so quiet that half of Kent forgets it exists until they need it. Junction 5 of the M25 is where the trouble concentrates: the A21 merge here is a reliable morning car park, and any incident on the M25 sends overflow straight through Dunton Green and Riverhead. The town itself is a proper commuter machine — Sevenoaks station car park fills early, the season-ticket brigade descend before eight, and the High Street's parking is priced with the confidence of a town that knows exactly what its houses are worth. Beyond the centre it turns quickly rural: Otford with its duck pond and level crossing, Kemsing under the Downs, Ide Hill and Brasted strung along lanes that were never widened for two-way traffic, let alone a recovery truck. Knole Park and its deer sit right on the edge of town, a reminder that this is where the North Downs commuter belt meets genuine countryside. Lovely to drive through on a Sunday; considerably less lovely when you're broken down on the A21 slip at half seven with the M25 backing up behind you.
