Tonbridge: the market town with the Norman castle, the excellent school, the enormous station car park — and a lifelong grievance about being confused with Tunbridge Wells four miles south. They are different places. Different councils, different histories, different spellings that predate the fussy Wells business entirely. Tonbridge also has one thing its posher neighbour doesn't: a river with genuine form for turning the town centre into a boating lake when the Medway decides it's had enough.

The Medway runs straight through the middle of Tonbridge, which is charming right up until it isn't. The town has flooded properly and repeatedly — a four-foot wall of water swept down the High Street in 1958, and 1968 saw the water chest-high in places — which is precisely why the Leigh flood barrier upstream now exists and why the sports pitches and town-centre car parks are still the first things to go under when a flood alert lands. Traffic-wise, the A26 carries you towards Maidstone and down to Tunbridge Wells, while the A21 skirts the town for London and Hastings, and the two combine to make the High Street and the Cannon Lane approaches a reliable weekday crawl. The station is the town's other defining feature: a vast car park serving the London commuter run, which empties every morning and fills every evening in a great tidal motion, taking a fair number of tired batteries and reluctant starters with it. The castle sits a ten-minute walk up the High Street from the platforms, with Upper Castle Field the nearest car park to it. Push out of the centre and you're quickly into Hildenborough along the old A21, Hadlow with its absurd 175-foot folly tower, and the lanes towards East Peckham, Golden Green, Shipbourne and Plaxtol — proper Kent countryside where the roads narrow, the phone signal wavers and a breakdown feels a very long way from anywhere. Just don't call it Tunbridge Wells. They really don't like that.
