Once you are on the island, the A249 runs into Sheerness past Queenborough and Blue Town, the historic naval-dockyard suburb that painted itself blue with paint liberated from the yard. The A250 heads east toward Minster, and the road carries on out to Eastchurch, Warden and Leysdown-on-Sea at the far end. Sheerness Docks still works away by the seafront, and parking runs to Beach Street and Trinity Road near the front, with the perennial low-grade war over which island car parks are free. Being surrounded by water on every side, Sheppey gets the full coastal salt treatment — brake lines, exhausts and bolts corroding faster than inland — and if your car fails badly here, remember the nearest mainland garage is over that one bridge.
