How it works
A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a honeycomb trap in your exhaust that catches soot before it leaves the tailpipe. It's self-cleaning: when exhaust gas gets hot enough — around 350–500°C on a long run (passive regen), or when the ECU deliberately injects extra fuel to hit roughly 600°C (active regen) — the trapped soot burns off to harmless ash. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve does a different job: it feeds a little cooled exhaust back into the engine to lower combustion temperature and cut nitrogen-oxide emissions. Both are emissions kit, both hate short stop-start journeys, and both get gummed up by carbon over time.
Warning signs to watch for
- •DPF warning light on the dash — soot has built past the safe level and a regen hasn't completed
- •Loss of power or 'limp mode' — the ECU protects the engine when the filter is dangerously blocked
- •Frequent, incomplete regens — lots of short trips never let the filter reach burn-off temperature
- •Rough idle, hesitation or a lumpy engine — often a clogged or stuck EGR valve
- •A strong diesel or sooty smell and thicker exhaust smoke — poor combustion and trapped soot
- •Rising fuel consumption — the engine works harder and runs richer trying to force regens

Can you just delete or remove my DPF or EGR to save hassle?
No — and we won't. Removing or 'deleting' a DPF or EGR from a road car is illegal in the UK, an automatic MOT failure since 2014, and can void your insurance. We only offer legal fixes: cleaning, forced regeneration, sensor repair and root-cause diagnosis, all of which keep your car road-legal.
How do I trigger a DPF regen myself before it blocks?
The simplest fix is a sustained 30–40 minute drive at motorway speeds in a lower gear to keep revs up, letting the exhaust reach passive-regen temperature. If the light stays on or you're already in limp mode, don't keep driving — that risks a fully blocked filter. Call us for a forced regen instead.
Is a blocked DPF always the filter's fault?
Often not. A blocked DPF is frequently a symptom of something else — leaky injectors, a stuck EGR, a boost leak or a faulty sensor dumping extra soot in. That's why we diagnose the whole system first. Just cleaning the filter without fixing the cause means it'll clog again within weeks.
