Clutch Repair & Replacement

AKA 'Spongy Pedal Fixers' — That burning smell at traffic lights? That's your clutch dying.

Slipping clutch? Biting point at the ceiling? Burning smell? We replace clutches, flywheels, and slave cylinders wherever your car is parked.

What's This All About Then?

That smell of burning toast when you pull away? That's not breakfast - that's your clutch begging for mercy. A worn clutch means slipping gears, high biting points, and eventually... not moving at all. Clutch replacement used to mean a week at the garage. We do it at your home or workplace, often same day. Clutch kit, dual mass flywheel, slave cylinder, release bearing - we replace what needs replacing and leave the rest alone. No upselling, no 'while we're in there' surprises. Just a clutch that actually works.

How it works

In a manual car the clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox. A friction plate (the clutch disc) sits between the engine's flywheel and a spring-loaded pressure plate. When your foot's off the pedal, the pressure plate clamps everything together so engine power flows to the wheels. Press the pedal and a hydraulic system — the master cylinder you push, feeding a slave cylinder — releases that clamp, letting you change gear. On many modern cars the flywheel is a Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF): a two-part sprung unit that soaks up engine vibration for smoother, quieter driving. The friction disc is the sacrificial part, designed to wear so the pricier components survive.

Warning signs to watch for

  • The clutch slips — revs climb but speed doesn't, especially uphill or in high gear (worn friction plate)
  • A high or 'sticky' biting point — the pedal engages near the top, a classic sign of wear
  • Juddering as you pull away — often a contaminated plate or a failing dual-mass flywheel
  • A rattle at idle that quietens when you press the pedal — a tell-tale of a worn DMF
  • Difficulty getting into gear or a spongy pedal — usually a failing master or slave cylinder
  • A burning smell in stop-start traffic — the clutch is slipping and overheating

Common causes

Normal wear — a clutch typically lasts 60,000–100,000 miles depending on how it's driven
Riding the clutch — resting your foot on the pedal or slipping it at junctions wears it fast
Stop-start city driving and heavy traffic — far harder on a clutch than motorway miles
Towing or carrying heavy loads — extra strain accelerates friction-plate wear
A leaking master or slave cylinder — loses hydraulic pressure so the clutch won't disengage cleanly
A failing dual-mass flywheel — the internal springs wear out, causing rattle and judder

What we do

We first confirm it's actually the clutch — a slipping or juddering feel can sometimes be a cylinder or flywheel — with a road test and inspection. For a full replacement we drop the gearbox to reach the clutch, and we'll always advise whether the flywheel needs doing at the same time (it usually makes sense to). Because it's a big job, doing it at your home or workplace saves you the hassle and cost of a garage stay.

Clutch Repair & Replacement — FAQs

Do I need a new flywheel when I replace the clutch?

Not always, but often. If your car has a dual-mass flywheel and it's worn or rattling, replacing the clutch alone is false economy — the judder will return. Since the gearbox is already out, fitting a new flywheel then costs only parts, not extra labour. We'll inspect it and give you an honest call before quoting.

How long can I drive with a slipping clutch?

Not long, and every mile makes it worse and pricier. A slipping clutch overheats, and once the friction material is gone you risk being stranded or damaging the flywheel. If revs are climbing without matching speed, or you smell burning, book it in soon rather than waiting for a roadside failure.

Is a hard-to-select gear always the clutch itself?

No — it's frequently the hydraulics. A leaking master or slave cylinder loses the pressure needed to fully disengage the clutch, so gears crunch or won't select. That's a cheaper fix than a full clutch. We diagnose which it is first, so you're not paying for a whole clutch when a cylinder would do.

What You Actually Get

Clutch kit replacement (friction plate, pressure plate, release bearing)
Dual mass flywheel replacement (the expensive bit)
Single mass flywheel conversion (budget-friendly option)
Slave cylinder replacement (hydraulic stuff)
Master cylinder service (the pedal end)
Clutch fluid bleed (spongy pedal fix)
Clutch adjustment where applicable (cable clutches)
Flywheel resurfacing assessment (sometimes saveable)

Random Knowledge You Didn't Ask For

A clutch engages and disengages about 1,500 times per hour in city traffic. Respect the clutch.

Riding the clutch for just 5 seconds at a time can halve its lifespan. Left foot on the floor, people.
