How it works

Each corner of your car has a spring and a damper (the shock absorber) working as a team. The spring takes the hit from a bump and compresses; the damper controls how fast that spring rebounds, so the wheel settles instead of bouncing. Many cars combine both into a single strut. Holding it all together are the arms and joints — wishbones, ball joints, and bushes — that let the wheel move up and down while still pointing where you steer. Rubber bushes cushion the joints and cut vibration. When any of these wear, the geometry drifts, tyres scrub unevenly, and the precise, planted feel disappears. Every part works together, so one worn bush upsets the whole corner.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Bouncing or floating after bumps — worn dampers let the spring keep oscillating instead of settling
  • Clunks or knocks over potholes — usually a tired ball joint, drop link, or perished bush
  • Uneven or edge-worn tyres — worn suspension throws the wheel alignment out
  • Nose-diving hard under braking or leaning heavily in corners — dampers past their best
  • The car pulls or wanders and feels vague — worn wishbone bushes or ball joints letting geometry drift
  • An oily film down the body of a shock or strut — the damper seal has failed

Simple age and mileage — dampers gradually lose their damping fluid and effectiveness
UK roads — potholes and speed bumps hammer bushes, joints and springs
Corrosion — road salt eats spring coils until they snap, often near the bottom
Perished rubber — bushes and mounts dry out, crack and lose their cushioning
Overloading or towing beyond the car's rated limits, stressing springs and dampers
A previous heavy impact — a kerb or big pothole can bend an arm or crack a mount

Do I need to replace shocks in pairs?

It's strongly recommended. Dampers wear gradually, so if one side is worn the other usually isn't far behind. Fitting one new and one old damper on the same axle gives uneven damping left to right, which can make the car feel unbalanced under braking or in corners. Replacing them as an axle pair keeps the handling even and predictable.

Can you do suspension work at my house?

Yes — most suspension jobs are ideal for mobile work. We come to your home or workplace with axle stands, spring compressors and the right tools to replace shocks, springs, bushes, wishbones and ball joints on your driveway. We just need a reasonably flat, firm surface to work safely. You skip the garage trip entirely and don't lose your car for the day.

Is it safe to drive with a worn shock absorber?

It's not immediately dangerous, but it's not something to ignore. Worn dampers lengthen braking distances, reduce grip in corners and in the wet, and cause uneven tyre wear. The car feels floaty and less stable, especially at speed or in an emergency stop. It's also an MOT failure. Best to get it checked sooner rather than let it worsen.
