ECU & Module Programming
AKA 'Brain Surgery' — Teaching old modules new tricks.
New module fitted but your car won't recognise it? We make introductions. Module programming, coding, and making electronics play nice.
Quick Facts
What's This All About Then?
So you've replaced a module and now your car's having an identity crisis. The new part doesn't know it belongs there, the car doesn't trust it, and everyone's confused. That's where we come in. We program and code modules to work with YOUR specific car. Key modules, ECUs, BCMs, instrument clusters - if it's got a chip, we can probably make it behave. We also do retrofits and coding for features your car has but someone forgot to turn on.
How it works
Cars run on networked electronic control units — engine, transmission, ABS, body, instrument cluster and many more — all talking over data buses. When you fit certain parts (a control module, a key, a throttle body, injectors, a DPF, even a battery on some cars) the vehicle has to be told via the diagnostic port: blank modules need programming with the right software and 'coding' to that car's exact options, some parts need their values written to the ECU, and keys must be paired to the immobiliser. It's done with manufacturer-level diagnostic tools, usually with a stable power supply and, for some makes, an online link to the maker's servers.
Warning signs to watch for
- •A newly-fitted part (module, key, sensor) that simply doesn't work yet
- •Warning lights or limp mode after a repair or a battery change
- •Wanting to retrofit/activate a feature (folding mirrors, lighting, etc.)
- •Immobiliser or key issues — lost keys, or a spare that isn't recognised
- •ECU upset after a flat battery or an interrupted update
- •The car driving oddly after losing power — lost 'adaptation' values
Common causes
What we do
Using manufacturer-grade equipment, we program and code modules to your exact vehicle, pair keys to the immobiliser, write adaptation and coding values, and carry out calibrations — throttle and steering-angle adaptations, DPF regenerations, injector coding and more — applying software updates where appropriate. We keep a stable power supply connected throughout to protect the ECUs. All mobile, at your location.
ECU & Module Programming — FAQs
I fitted a new part but it's not working — is it faulty?
Often not. Many modules, sensors and keys have to be programmed and coded to your specific car before they function. We can code it to the vehicle, which usually brings it to life without replacing anything else.
Can you program a spare or replacement car key?
Yes — we pair keys to your car's immobiliser. For lost-key situations we can usually add a new key (and disable a missing one where needed) using diagnostic tools. Cutting or supply of certain keys may be arranged via our locksmith partners.
My car drives strangely after a flat battery — why?
Some cars lose learned adaptation values when they lose power (throttle, transmission and more). They either re-learn over time or need re-adapting and coding with a diagnostic tool — which we can do on the spot.
What You Actually Get
Random Knowledge You Didn't Ask For
Your car's ECU makes 250 million calculations per second. It's literally smarter than most of us.
Some cars have over 100 control modules. It's basically a server room on wheels.
