What's This All About Then?
The ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the little computer that runs your engine — and it's tied to your immobiliser, your keys and thousands of learned settings. When it fails, most people panic-buy a dealer ECU and then get stung again for coding, key matching and programming. There's a smarter way: cloning. We read all the data off your original unit — the EEPROM/flash, the immobiliser data, the adaptations — and copy it onto a matching replacement or donor ECU. The result behaves exactly like your old one: same keys, same immobiliser, no reprogramming needed. It just works. If your original is completely dead and unreadable, we'll do it the honest way instead — fit a virgin/blank unit and program, code and immobiliser-match it to your car. Either way, we come to you with proper bench and OBD kit and a stable power supply. No tow truck, no dealer waiting room.
How it works
Inside every ECU are memory chips — an EEPROM and flash memory — that store two kinds of information. First, the software and calibration that tells the engine how to run. Second, the vehicle-specific data: the immobiliser code that talks to your keys, plus the adaptations the ECU has learned over time (fuel trims, throttle positions and so on). Cloning means reading all of that data off your original unit and writing an exact copy onto a matching replacement or donor ECU. Because the immobiliser data is copied too, the replacement thinks it IS your original — so your existing keys and immobiliser carry on working with no reprogramming. The catch: cloning needs the original to be at least partly readable. If it's totally dead, we can't copy what we can't read — so instead we fit a virgin (blank) ECU and program it, code it to your car and marry it to the immobiliser and keys from scratch.
Warning signs to watch for

If it can be read, we clone it: we pull the full data (EEPROM/flash, immobiliser data and adaptations) off your original and write it onto a matching replacement or donor unit, so it's plug-and-play with your existing keys and immobiliser — no reprogramming. If the original is completely dead, we fit a virgin/blank ECU instead and program, code and immobiliser-match it to your car. Where a unit is water-damaged or corroded, we'll attempt data recovery before anything else, because a successful read saves you the cost and hassle of full reprogramming. It's all done on-site with proper bench and OBD tools and a stable regulated power supply — a clean, steady voltage is essential, because a dropout mid-write can brick a module. What's the difference between ECU cloning and virgin/blank programming?
Cloning copies all the data — including the immobiliser data and adaptations — from your original ECU onto a replacement, so it drops straight in and your keys keep working with no reprogramming. Virgin (blank) programming is for when the original is completely dead: we fit an empty unit and program, code and immobiliser-match it to your car from scratch. Cloning is quicker and cheaper when it's possible; virgin programming is the fallback when it isn't.
Do I need to reprogram my keys after a clone?
No. That's the whole point of cloning — because we copy the immobiliser data across as well as the engine software, the cloned ECU recognises your existing keys and immobiliser exactly like the original did. No locksmith, no key coding, no re-marrying to the car.
Can you clone a completely dead ECU?
Only if we can read it. Cloning works by copying the data off the original, so the unit needs to be at least partly readable. If it's truly dead — no communication and no recoverable data — there's nothing to copy, so we'd fit a virgin ECU and program it to your car instead. If it's water-damaged or corroded we'll always attempt data recovery first, because a successful read saves you the extra programming.
Is cloning cheaper than getting a dealer ECU?
Usually, yes — often by a large margin. A dealer ECU is expensive on its own, and it typically arrives blank, so you then pay again for coding, programming and key/immobiliser matching. A clone uses a matching replacement or donor unit and needs none of that reprogramming, so you save on both the part and the labour. We'll give you a clear quote once we've confirmed the ECU is readable.
