What's This All About Then?
Three days of British summer and suddenly everyone remembers their AC doesn't work. Your air conditioning system loses about 10% of its refrigerant every year just sitting there. Add a small leak and you're basically driving a mobile sauna. We offer AC regas (topping up the cold juice), leak detection, compressor diagnosis, condenser repairs, and that anti-bacterial treatment that stops your vents smelling like a gym locker. All done at your location because driving to a garage in a hot car is nobody's idea of fun.

How it works
Car air con is a sealed loop that moves heat, not cold. The compressor, driven by the engine belt, squeezes refrigerant into a hot high-pressure gas. That heat is dumped outside through the condenser at the front of the car, turning the refrigerant to liquid. It then passes through an expansion valve into the evaporator behind the dashboard, where it rapidly expands, goes very cold and absorbs heat — and moisture — from the cabin air blown over it. That's why cold, dry air comes out of the vents and water drips under the car. The refrigerant cycles back to the compressor and round again. Because it also removes moisture, air con is your fastest demister, not just a summer luxury.
Warning signs to watch for
- •Air con blowing warm, or nowhere near as cold as it used to
- •It takes ages to cool, or only cools when you're moving, not at idle
- •Musty, damp or eggy smells when you first switch it on
- •The windscreen taking far longer than usual to demist
- •A hissing, rattling or squealing noise when the air con engages
- •Visible dampness inside, weak airflow, or the compressor never kicking in
Common causes
What we do
We identify your system's refrigerant type and correct charge weight first — older cars use R134a, most cars from around 2017 use R1234yf — then recover, vacuum-test for leaks and recharge to the exact factory weight. We check the compressor, pressures and airflow, and can treat smells and swap the pollen filter. If we find a genuine leak, we'll tell you honestly rather than just topping it up to fail again. All done on your driveway or at work.
Air Conditioning Service — FAQs
How often should I re-gas my air con?
Roughly every two to three years as routine maintenance, because refrigerant naturally permeates out over time and cooling quietly fades. There's no warning light for it. If cooling has dropped off suddenly rather than gradually, that points to a leak instead — topping that up just wastes gas, so we'd leak-test first and fix the cause before recharging.
Why does my air con smell musty?
That smell is usually mould and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator behind the dash, plus a clogged pollen filter. The cold surface collects moisture, which is the perfect breeding ground. An anti-bacterial treatment and a fresh cabin filter clears it. Running your air con regularly, and switching to fresh air for the last few minutes of a journey to dry the evaporator, helps stop it coming back.
Should I use air con in winter?
Yes, and it genuinely helps. Air con dries the air, so it demists your windscreen far faster than heat alone — great on cold, damp mornings. Running it regularly all year also keeps the compressor seals lubricated and the system healthy, which prevents leaks and seizures. Leaving air con off for months is one of the quickest ways to end up with an expensive repair.
