There's nothing quite like watching your car roll down the driveway because the handbrake decided today wasn't its day. Manual handbrakes need cable adjustment and sometimes replacement. Electronic parking brakes (EPB) add motors, switches, and computers to the mix. We handle both. Stuck handbrake, not holding, warning lights, auto-hold problems, cables seized from sitting too long - all the parking brake problems, sorted. How it works
There are two very different systems. A traditional manual handbrake pulls a cable that clamps the rear brakes — over time the cable stretches, seizes or corrodes, and the lever creeps ever higher up its travel; the fix is adjustment, freeing or replacing the cable, and sometimes the rear shoes or pads. An electronic parking brake (EPB) replaces the lever with a button and small motors on the rear calipers, controlled electronically. It's neater but more complex: faults usually need diagnostic tools to read and reset, and the calipers must be put into “service mode” electronically before rear brake work — you can't just wind them back by hand. One quirk worth knowing: because the EPB is motor-driven, a completely flat battery can leave it stuck in whatever state it was in, since the motors need power to release. We handle both types, and carry the kit to talk to the electronic ones.

How do I know if I have an electronic parking brake?
Look for the control. A manual handbrake is a lever between the seats you physically pull up; an electronic parking brake (EPB) is a small switch or button, usually near the gearstick, marked with a “P” in a circle. If you press a button rather than heave a lever, it's electronic — and it needs diagnostic tools to service properly.
Why does my handbrake pull up so far now?
On a cable system that's classic stretch and wear — the cable lengthens over time and the rear brakes wear, so the lever travels further before it bites. It's usually a straightforward adjustment, though a badly seized or frayed cable may need replacing. Left too long, it'll eventually fail to hold and flag on the MOT.
Can you fix an electronic parking brake that's stuck on?
Often yes. First we check the basics — a flat or weak battery alone can leave an EPB stuck, since the release motors need power. If it's an actual fault, we read the stored codes with diagnostic kit, reset the system and check the caliper motors. Some faults need a part; we'll diagnose it and quote before doing anything.
