For years the pinch point was the single-carriageway A21 through Pembury — a road so notoriously slow that the dualling of the Tonbridge-to-Pembury stretch was treated as a local miracle when it finally opened. The Pembury roundabout, where the A21 meets the hospital and the A228, still backs up handsomely at rush hour. Parking is its own genteel ordeal: the Pantiles Car Park sits just off the A26, Major Yorks Road (the Upper Pantiles) carries a 2.4m height restriction that catches out vans and roof boxes alike, and both fill up on any half-decent Saturday. The topography is the real quirk — the town rises and falls between the common, Mount Ephraim and the valley floor, so cold-morning clutch judder and tired handbrakes announce themselves faster here than almost anywhere in Kent. Southborough and High Brooms cling to the A26 heading north; Rusthall and Langton Green trail off west; Pembury sits out by the A21. Steep, leafy, affluent and slow — a lovely place to live and an aggravating place to be stuck in traffic, which around here amounts to roughly the same postcode.
