Oxted: a town so neatly cleaved in two that it barely bothers pretending otherwise. There's Old Oxted — the original, crooked, listed-building half — and New Oxted, which grew up around the station when the railway arrived and never looked back. Between them and the escarpment behind them sits some of the steepest tarmac in Surrey, and the sort of green commuter belt where a car dying on a country lane counts as a genuine emergency.

Oxted sits at the foot of the North Downs, about five minutes from Junction 6 of the M25, which is both its great convenience and its great vulnerability — because when the M25 sneezes, Oxted catches the diverted traffic. The A25 is the town's spine, running east to west and famously dividing Old Oxted from New Oxted; a bypass was built in the late 1960s to spare the old village's narrow lanes, which were never designed for anything wider than a cart. Behind the town the land rises hard into the escarpment: Titsey Hill and the climb up onto Limpsfield Chart are proper North Downs gradients, steep enough to punish a tired clutch and give worn brakes a serious talking-to on the way back down. The railway threads under the whole lot through the Oxted Tunnel — over a mile long, the longest on the line — which is why the station sits where it does and why the car park fills early with commuters heading for East Croydon and London. Push out into the surrounding villages — Limpsfield, Hurst Green, Woldingham, Tatsfield, Tandridge, Crowhurst — and you're into deep, lane-laced Surrey where the scenery is glorious and the mobile signal is a rumour. It's beautiful country to break down in, and a nightmare to get recovered from, which is rather the point of having someone come to you instead.

The whole appeal of living out here is the lanes and the hills — right up until your car gives up on one of them, miles from anywhere, with the nearest garage a white-knuckle limp away over Titsey Hill. We reverse that: we come down the escarpment to wherever you are, whether that's a Hurst Green driveway, the A25, or a single-track lane near Tatsfield that the recovery firm can't find.
