Caterham is a town of two halves, quite literally: Caterham-on-the-Hill sits up on the plateau, while Caterham Valley — with the station and the main shops — occupies a steep-sided dry valley carved into the North Downs. Getting between the two, and out of the town at all, means gradients, and gradients here mean clutches, brakes and cooling systems working harder than the mileage suggests. The A22 Godstone Road is the main artery, running north toward Croydon and London and south over the Caterham Bypass — one of the earliest bypasses in the country, opened back in 1939 — before crossing the M25 near Godstone. That stretch snakes through the Downs with a couple of genuinely sharp bends before it reaches Junction 6 of the motorway, which is the town's lifeline and its chokepoint in equal measure; when the A22 shuts (as it did for days after a fuel spill near the M25), the whole area feels it. Around the edges sit Warlingham and its green, Whyteleafe strung along the valley floor, Chaldon up on the heights, and Old Coulsdon on the London fringe. It's classic Surrey commuter belt: station car parks that fill before eight, a lot of miles racked up crawling toward Croydon, and a topography that treats worn brake pads and tired clutches as a personal challenge.

The trouble with a town built on a hill is that every fault seems to reveal itself halfway up one — the clutch that won't bite on the climb out of the Valley, the brakes that fade on the way down.
