The Derby put Epsom Downs on the map — and on Derby Day, it puts the entire local road network firmly off it. The rest of the year, Epsom and Ewell just gets on with the quiet business of ferrying commuters up the A24 toward London and back.

Epsom sits on the edge of the Downs south-west of London, with the A24 running through it toward Leatherhead and the A240 heading off toward Kingston and the Tolworth end of the A3. For most of the year it's genteel, mildly congested commuter country — the Ashley Centre and its multi-storey soaking up the town-centre shoppers, the station queue forming early. Then comes the Derby, and the whole place transforms. On Derby Day the roads around Epsom Downs Racecourse start seizing up from around nine in the morning, and the Jockey Club and council between them shut, divert or make one-way a long list of routes: Walton Road south of the course, Ashley Road between Langley Vale Road and Downs Road, Grandstand Road and Old London Road all get closed or restricted so the shuttle buses can run. The advice locals have long since internalised is simple — the train is the only way in that doesn't involve sitting stationary on the A240. Post-race, the traffic stays heavy for two or three hours after the last race. Away from all that, Ewell keeps its old village core around Bourne Hall, Stoneleigh and Worcester Park merge quietly into the suburban sprawl toward London, and Cuddington and Langley Vale sit up near the Downs. It's high-mileage commuter territory, which is exactly the sort of driving that finds out a tired battery, a worn brake or a clutch on its last legs.

Come Derby week, half of Epsom's roads are closed and the other half are a car park — so the last thing you want is to be moving a broken-down car through it to reach a garage. Ideally not on the Downs at 9am on Derby Day, but even then, we'll find a way round.
