Cranbrook sits just off the meeting of the A229, the Rochester–Hawkhurst road, and the A262 running Lamberhurst to Biddenden — two decent roads that carry most of the sensible traffic. Everything else is deep Weald: sunken lanes, blind crests, and hedges tall enough to block the satnav signal, let alone the view. The town famously lost its railway; the old Hawkhurst Branch Line, which once linked Hawkhurst, Cranbrook, Goudhurst and Horsmonden up to Paddock Wood, closed in 1961, and the nearest working station has been Staplehurst, four-odd miles north, ever since. So people here drive, and they drive a lot, on roads that predate the internal combustion engine by a few centuries. Sissinghurst Castle Garden pulls National Trust crowds down lanes never designed for two Range Rovers to meet, and the crawl through Sissinghurst village itself can be memorable. Goudhurst perches on a hill with a pond at the bottom and a gradient that punishes tired clutches, while the run out to Hawkhurst and Benenden is a procession of tight bends where verge damage, potholes and the odd flooded dip are simply part of the deal. It is gorgeous countryside — Cranbrook School, the white weatherboard cottages, Union Mill on the skyline — but it is also the kind of place where a dead battery on a lane near Frittenden leaves you a genuinely long way from professional help. Distances to garages are real out here, and the recovery lorry has to fight the same single-track logic you did.

With no station and few local garages, Cranbrook runs on cars, and when one stops on a lane near Benenden or Goudhurst you can be miles from the nearest workshop.
