New Romney sits in the middle of Romney Marsh, a great flat expanse of reclaimed marshland and shingle where the horizon goes on forever and the roads do not. The A259 threads along the coastal edge through Dymchurch and on toward Hythe, while the A2070 strikes north from the Marsh up to Hamstreet and Ashford and the rest of the world — and between them there is not a lot else. Access is genuinely limited: Dungeness, one of the strangest and most remote spots in the country, is reached essentially by single roads off the A259, and the further out you go — Lydd, Littlestone, Greatstone, the shingle at Dungeness itself — the longer any recovery truck has to travel to find you. Lydd Airport (officially London Ashford Airport) sits just east of Lydd, reached mainly via the A259 and the B2075. The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch miniature railway runs its little steam trains right across the Marsh to Dungeness, which is charming but not much help with a dead battery. Parking is rarely the problem here — space is the one thing the Marsh has plenty of — but distance and remoteness are. The sea and the shingle mean the same coastal salt corrosion applies to brake lines, exhausts and bolts, and the flat, exposed, wind-scoured roads out to Dungeness and Lydd are a bleakly beautiful place to be stuck. If your car is going to fail, it will pick the spot with the fewest roads out and the biggest sky.
