Westerham lives on the A25, the main road running east–west along the foot of the North Downs, and that road is the town's blessing and its curse. Through the centre it kinks around two sharp bends and squeezes to a couple of pinch points barely 4.8 metres wide, against the 7.3 metres this class of road is supposed to have — because, as the town readily admits, the widths were set for horse and cart, not for HGVs and the M25 overspill. The result is a lot of stop-start crawling, hot brakes and clutches, and stressed cooling systems. Leave the A25 and it gets steeper still: the B2026 climbs Hosey Hill toward Chartwell, and the lanes up to Ide Hill and Toys Hill are proper North Downs escarpment stuff, tight, wooded and unforgiving, with gradients that find every weakness in a tired car. Chartwell, Churchill's house, brings National Trust traffic filtering off the B2026 onto Mapleton Road; Quebec House and Squerryes Court add their own visitors. West of town the villages of Brasted and Sundridge sit along the A25, while Crockham Hill and the drop toward Edenbridge involve more of those steep, hedge-lined lanes. Add a slice of Biggin Hill on the northern edge and you have a corner of Kent where the terrain does half the damage. Handbrakes get a workout, clutches slip, brakes fade, and a car that dies partway up Toys Hill is not somewhere a garage's courtesy tow reaches easily. It is glorious walking country and awful breakdown country — which suits us fine.
