On 12 October 2000 the River Uck burst its banks and flooded the town from around 5am, with levels rising so fast that by mid-morning a torrent up to 1.9 metres deep was flowing through the town centre. The river also gave the town its most quoted quirk: the River Uck signs were vandalised so persistently that the council fitted specially shaped ones designed to make it harder to add a stray letter to the front. Beyond the flood plain, the surrounding area is deep, rural High Weald — Ridgewood and New Town closer in, then Buxted, Framfield, Hadlow Down and Blackboys spreading out into narrow, hedge-lined lanes past landmarks like Bridge Cottage and Buxted Park. Those country roads are hard on clutches and brakes, a genuine drive from the nearest garage, and exactly the sort of place where breaking down means a long, expensive wait for recovery if you can't get a mechanic to come to you.
