Hastings is a town the road network never quite forgave. Its main link to London, the A21, is largely single carriageway, steep, rural and gloriously slow; its Old Town is a medieval knot of twittens and near-vertical hills; and the sea, ever-present, spends its days quietly eating the underside of every car in town. Hastings is defined by two things the rest of Sussex mostly avoids: hills and salt. The A21 is the town's lifeline to London and the M25, yet south of the East Sussex border it's entirely single carriageway, often steep, and notorious enough that people describe the drive down as an ordeal — it carries far more long-distance traffic than a road of its design was ever meant to. The A259 handles the coast, crawling along the seafront and out towards Bexhill. Then there's the Old Town: a labyrinth of narrow lanes and even narrower twittens — the local word for the tight passages threading between them — climbing hills so severe the town solved the problem with funicular railways. The East Hill Cliff Railway is the steepest funicular in the whole UK at a 78% gradient, which tells you everything about the terrain your handbrake is dealing with in St Clements or up towards the West Hill. Every steep hill-start, every cambered lane in Ore, Hollington, Silverhill and out towards Bexhill puts real strain on clutches and brakes. And over all of it sits the salt. Coastal air corrodes metal far faster than inland — brake and fuel lines, suspension components and the whole undercarriage take a hammering, and salt is a classic cause of seized brake calipers along this stretch of coast. Combine that with the Old Town's tight parking, the general economic squeeze the town's long lived with, and roads that swing from seafront-flat to alpine in a hundred yards, and cars here lead a hard, salty, uphill life. Which, frankly, keeps us busy.
