Pop & Bang, Crackle & Popcorn Map
Off-road, export & motorsport vehicles only
Bangs and pops on lift-off, a crackle out of the tailpipe, that machine-gun 'popcorn' burble as you back off — it's the sound that turns heads at a track day. We map it in software, sensibly, and keep the original file safe.
The legal bit (we'll be quick)
Bangs, pops, no speed limiter, launch-control heroics — cracking fun, and strictly track and off-road. Out on the public road the noise and speed rules didn't magically vanish, so keeping it legal is on you. We build it; you behave. Still under manufacturer warranty? Fair warning — this'll almost certainly wave it goodbye, so weigh that up first.
Track & off-road only. The noise and speed rules still apply out on the road — keeping it legal is on you, and it can void a manufacturer warranty. We build it, you behave.
What it is
A pop and bang map (also called a crackle map, popcorn map or burble tune) is an overrun tune that deliberately alters ignition timing and fuelling when you lift off the throttle or change gear. Instead of a clean cut, a little unburnt fuel is allowed to ignite in the exhaust, giving you those characteristic bangs, pops, crackles and the rapid 'popcorn' burble. It's the same family of effect under different nicknames — pop and bang, bangs and pops, crackle, popcorn, burble — all achieved through the ECU, no hardware bombs or gimmicks required.
Who it's for
This one is all about drama and sound rather than lap times. It's popular with track-day cars, show cars and anyone who just loves the theatre of a barking exhaust on the overrun. The effect is far more pronounced with a sports or decat exhaust, so if you've already fitted a freer-flowing system it's the natural finishing touch. Purely for performance, this is a character upgrade, not a power one.
What you get
How we do it
We do the lot in software using dealer-level tools, working from a healthy, stable power supply so the ECU is never flashed on a dodgy voltage. Before we touch anything we back up your original file, so the map is fully reversible. We set the effect at a sensible level rather than cranking it to the point of self-harm — enough character to enjoy, without cooking your exhaust. If you decide it's not for you, we simply restore the backup.
Out on the road (yeah, behave)
Honest bit: on public roads, excessive exhaust noise can breach Construction & Use noise regulations and is a quick way to annoy neighbours and attract police attention. There's a mechanical cost too — dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust raises temperatures, so an overdone map can shorten the life of your exhaust, turbo and catalytic converter. That's why we set it up sensibly and recommend it for off-road and track use. Ultimately it's the owner's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is used lawfully on the public road.
Pop & Bang Map — the questions
Is a pop and bang map legal on the road?
Speed limits and noise rules still apply. Excessive exhaust noise can breach Construction & Use regulations and draw police or MOT attention, so a loud crackle map really belongs on track or off-road use. We can set a milder, more sensible level, but ensuring the car is used lawfully on the public road is the owner's responsibility.
Will it damage my car?
Firing unburnt fuel in the exhaust raises temperatures, so an aggressive, overdone map can shorten the life of the exhaust, turbo and cat over time. That's exactly why we keep the effect at a sensible level rather than maxing it out — enough for the sound and character without unnecessarily cooking your hardware.
Do I need a decat or sports exhaust for it to work?
No, but it makes a big difference. The bangs, pops and popcorn burble are far louder and crisper with a freer-flowing sports or decat system. On a standard exhaust the effect is much more muted, so most people fit the map after upgrading the exhaust.
Is it reversible?
Yes. We back up your original ECU file before mapping, so if you change your mind — or want to sell the car standard — we simply flash the original file back. It's all done in software with dealer-level tools.
Off-road or export build?
Tell us the vehicle and how it's used and we'll advise honestly.
